How is the Swallowable Gastric Balloon Applied?

The balloon, compressed inside the capsule, is swallowed with the help of water. The capsule is designed to be easily swallowed.

The application of the Allurion Swallowable Gastric Balloon takes about 15 minutes. The balloon, compressed in a swallowable-sized capsule, is swallowed with the help of a thin flexible string attached to it, using water.

One of our patients' biggest concerns is the fear of not being able to swallow the swallowable gastric balloon capsule. However, in all of our procedures to date, all patients have easily swallowed the capsule. Nevertheless, to address this possibility, the doctor uses a thin guide. In such a situation, the swallowing process is completed successfully with the help of this guide.

Before inflation, the position of the balloon capsule is checked using X-rays.

After swallowing the capsule, the position of the capsule in the stomach is checked using a fluoroscopy (motion X-ray) device. Through this fluoroscopy device, the patient can see the capsule in their stomach. Once the suitability of the capsule's position is confirmed, water is transferred into the balloon through the remaining external tube. The balloon is then inflated. After inflation, the balloon's position is checked again using the fluoroscopy device. Once confirmed, the external tube is pulled out by the doctor, completing the procedure.

After 4 months, the balloon's contents are automatically drained through a self-dissolving valve, and the deflated balloon is naturally expelled through the through the digestive system. One of the most common questions from our patients is whether this expulsion may cause intestinal blockage. Due to the balloon's very thin and smooth structure, this is highly unlikely. We have never encountered such an issue in our clinic to date.

How is the Balloon placed?

The placement procedure occurs during a brief outpatient visit, taking less than 20 minutes. The process is simple: you swallow a capsule containing the deflated Balloon with the help of a catheter. Once an x-ray confirms the Balloon is in your stomach, it is filled with water through the catheter. A second x-ray is performed to ensure the Balloon is adequately filled.

Can I return to normal activities after placement?

After the less than 20-minute placement, you can continue with your life; however, you may have some symptoms for a few days such as nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps.
